The Tide

waves-4.jpg

Do you feel it? Do you see it? The tide is here. The now is where the immensity of change is at its highest peak. It’s all in this moment. What will you do with it?

There are moments in our lives when there’s no going back, no escaping the pull of change. Sometimes these moments are intense and we know them beyond any doubt. Other times, these moments are subtle and pass us by with such ease that we’re only aware of them after a little reflection and introspection.

“I can’t do it. It’s too much to handle.”

I’ve had my fair share of life altering moments, both vast and minute…intense and subtle. And I’ve taken notice that a common thread through them all is that occasionally we are the instigators of change but more often then not we have no true control of these moments and are at their whim as if a kite in a hurricane. But still, with all its vastness or minuteness, its intensity or subtlety, at the end we have a choice. We have a choice as to either try and build the pillars of today off of the expired blueprints of yesterday. We have a choice to float aimlessly on the seas of impulse figuring that control isn’t in our grasp in any matter. But hidden deep within our minds and our hearts lays the obscured third option.

“I don’t have what it takes. They’ll all think I’m a joke.”

The third option is basic in its simplicity. You can accept that there’s no going back through the window of yesterday and although tomorrow may be guided by the hands of fate, all we truly have are the currents of now. In Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar, Brutus says:

“There is a tide in the affairs of men

Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;

Omitted, all the voyage of their life

Is bound in shallows and in miseries.

On such a full sea are we now afloat,

And we must take the current when it serves,

Or lose our ventures.”

It’s our choice to see that through the ups and the downs, through the good and the bad, that we still have a choice in the end. We can surrender to the current and admit our defeat when change serves. Or we can swim with it, not fully knowing where it will take us but striding as if we did.

“Hasn’t the past taught me anything? I’m not capable of this.”

There will be those that don't understand what I'm saying and others that do. These others feel the weight of change as I do, both the desire to create it and the desire to rise from it. Even as I write this very piece, my thoughts struggle to accept there's no going back. I can't go back to when I was too affraid to show the world my deepest and most personal thoughts. But like the person who has a life altering accident; the person who survived an illness that’s claimed the lives of so many; the person who tries to walk in the footsteps of idols; the person who fears repeating the mistakes of those that came before them; the person who's imaginative spirt gets tucked away beneath reality, I have a choice. I could either take that current as it serves or lose this venture forever.

“Who cares what I think anyways?”

There’s a story I once heard of an old man who’d fallen off the side of a ship and was stranded at sea, with no shore or boat in site. He could have given up and disappeared into the darkness of the sea floor. He could have simply floated; awaiting the element of nature that would claim his life. But he did neither. Looking out onto the unending sea, the man simply gathered what strength he had left, he gathered what crumbs of hope he still had within him and he started swimming. Perhaps his efforts were simply all in vein. Perhaps the current would have carry him to the deliverance that he couldn’t yet see. He had no idea either way but all the man knew for sure was that yesterday he fell off the side of a ship and tomorrow might very well not exist, at least for him. What better moment to give everything he had then now, because that’s all he had. All we have is now...

...what will you do with it? It’s all in this moment. The now is where the immensity of change is at its highest peak. The tide is here.

Do you see it?

Do you feel it?
